When the Media Calls
Calls from reporters can be stressful, especially if you’re asked for an immediate quote for a story that’s on a tight deadline. If you get a call from the media, contact your local dairy promotion organization for assistance. It can provide background information and other support materials.
Remember: You can ask for some time to prepare before your interview. Here is a list of questions to ask a reporter on initial contact:
- Your name again? What media outlet do you represent?
- What is the angle of your story?
- What triggered this story?
- Are you speaking to other sources? Whom?
- How much do you know about dairy farming (and interview topic) and have you ever visited a dairy farm?
- When is your deadline?
- May I call you back in 30 minutes? (Allow time to contact your local dairy promotion organization, review key messages and determine if you’re the best source to conduct an interview.)
- How long will the interview last?
- What is your phone number?
- May I suggest you visit dairyfarmingtoday.org?
