When the Media Calls
Calls from reporters can be stressful, especially if you’re asked for an immediate quote for a story that’s on a tight deadline. Remember, you are the expert who has the information the reporter needs. You can ask for some time to prepare before your interview.
If you get a call from the media, contact your local dairy promotion organization for assistance. They can provide background information and other support materials.
Here is a list of questions to ask a reporter on initial contact:
- Your name again? What media outlet do you represent?
- What is the story about?
- What particular aspect are you focusing on? What triggered this story?
- Are you speaking to other sources? To whom?
- How much do you know about (insert interview topic)?
- What is your deadline?
- May I call you back in 30 minutes? (Allow time to contact your local promotion organization, review key messages and determine if you’re the best source to conduct an interview.)
- About how long will the interview last?
- What is your phone number?
