Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy Offers Unprecedented Opportunity for Industry Collaboration to Increase Sales
Dairy producers, processors and manufacturers have announced an unprecedented agreement to collaborate on pre-competitive initiatives through a new Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy (Innovation Center). The goal is to accelerate industry innovation throughout the supply chain to increase sales in an increasingly competitive consumer marketplace.
The Innovation Center was established by America’s dairy farmers through Dairy Management Inc.™ (DMI), the nonprofit organization that manages the producer checkoff program. The Innovation Center extends the influence of dairy checkoff efforts by leveraging the resources of all segments of the industry to address common issues and opportunities that affect dairy sales and growth.
Through the Innovation Center, the entire industry will work together to address six priorities established by its board of directors comprising a blue-ribbon group of executives and chairs from the nation’s leading producer, processor and manufacturing organizations. The priorities include:
· Sustainability
· Health and Wellness
· Product Development, Information and Communications
· Regulatory Issues (excludes pricing)
· Consumer Confidence
· Globalization

Study Finds More Low-fat, Fat-free Dairy Protein May Benefit Adults
Research shows that eating more than the minimum requirement of protein may be beneficial to adults. Higher protein diets are linked with a lower risk for many health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. The protein research findings were presented in the May 2008 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
This is great news for dairy producers who, through their checkoff investment, help form life-long dairy consumers by educating them about the health benefits of dairy products. Checkoff staff is sharing these research findings with targeted national media. Learn more…

Producer-Funded Export efforts help drive dairy market growth
Dairy producers are helping meet unmet dairy demand of consumers in Japan and around the globe by building profitable markets for U.S. dairy products and ingredients through their checkoff investment in the U.S. Dairy Export Council® (USDEC).
In the last few years, Japanese customers have come to seek and appreciate the high-quality products offered by U.S. dairy producers. The United States had already gained a foothold in Japan’s retail market with cream cheese, and U.S. suppliers wanted to expand into other cheese markets. In 2007, the U.S. dairy industry made great strides in doing so with the help of USDEC’s marketing efforts that emphasized high-value artisan cheeses and American originals. Learn more...

From farm to consumer, dairy industry leaders have joined together to launch a comprehensive sustainability initiative that will encourage industry innovations, improve environmental performance and position the industry for future marketplace demands.
The initiative – led by national organizations Dairy Management Inc.™, National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association – will identify key supply-chain innovations that, as part of a comprehensive sustainability effort, can help position dairy as a preferred product among the rapidly increasing number of socially-conscious consumers. Among the focus areas of the effort will be identifying opportunities to reduce energy consumption and costs in milk production and processing, as well as boost on-farm income opportunities in emerging “green” energy markets.
