NDC, founded in 1915, is the producer-funded nutrition education and research arm of DMI and provides nutrition information through national, state and regional dairy council organizations.
Dairy producers, through their investment in the National Dairy Council® (NDC) — the nutrition research and education arm of the national dairy checkoff — are helping to improve the health of Hispanic consumers by educating them about the benefits of nutrient-rich dairy.
NDC is teaming up with the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), which represents nearly 36,000 Hispanic physicians, to improve the health of the nation’s Hispanic population through an education campaign that reinforces dairy’s nutrient package.
According to research conducted by Dairy Management Inc.™ (DMI), the organization that manages the national dairy checkoff program, Hispanics who come to the United States are often great consumers of dairy when they first arrive. However, as Hispanics become integrated into the U.S. culture and have U.S.-born children, their dairy consumption decreases.
“This is a troubling trend that needs to be reversed,” said Ann Marie Krautheim, senior vice president of nutrition affairs for the NDC. “Our partnership with NHMA will help us better educate Hispanics, both those who’ve recently arrived and those who’ve lived in the United States for generations, on the need for three daily servings of low-fat and fat-free dairy.”
NHMA is the latest health professional organization to join the 3-A-Day™ of Dairy program, a nutrition-based education and marketing program that aims to increase awareness of the health benefits of dairy foods and encourage three daily servings of low-fat and fat-free dairy. NHMA joins other 3-A-Day of Dairy medical partners, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Dietetic Association, the National Medical Association, and the School Nutrition Association.
