About Ingredient Marketing

Dairy checkoff-funded efforts in dairy ingredient manufacturing/marketing aim to increase demand for and sales of U.S.-produced dairy ingredients among food and beverage manufacturers.

  • The checkoff reaches food and beverage product developers through on-site one-on-one meetings and seminars with leaders in the food and beverage industry and annual meetings, such as the Institute for Food Technologists Annual Meeting + FOOD EXPO®.
  • The Dairy Technical Support Hotline (1-800-248-8829) receives more than 1,000 calls each year from the food and beverage industry and helps answer questions about dairy ingredients to showcase dairy advantages and remove obstacles in product development reformulation.

Ingredient Success Stories

Dairy checkoff-funded efforts contributed to significant consumer marketplace dairy innovations:

  • Hershey’s® PayDay Pro™ Bars — The checkoff provided nutrition and technical information on dairy and whey protein to help develop the high-energy protein bar. The bars will use 200,000 pounds of U.S. dairy proteins annually, which requires approximately 15 million pounds of milk.
  • Kellogg’s Special K2O Protein Waters – Checkoff staff worked with Kellogg’s to supply ingredient information, consumer trends, testing methodologies, and a prototype to help create a new whey protein-enhanced water that will use an estimated 150,000 pounds of whey protein isolate, which requires 25 million pounds of milk annually.
  • SlimFast® Optima™ – Checkoff-funded research on consumer preferences helped justify the reformulation of SlimFast drinks that now contain more real skim milk. This created demand for an estimated 34 to 68 million pounds of milk annually.
  • Kellogg’s Reduced-Fat Cheez-Its® – Dairy promotion staff provided technical support and assisted in cheesemaking practices to develop the cracker using fat-free Cheddar, which will use up to 30 million pounds of milk annually.
