Launched in 2003, the 3-A-Day™ of Dairy program aims to help increase the average consumption of dairy from 1.6 servings to three servings a day and help address the nation’s calcium crisis. The program is bolstered by the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommends consuming at least three servings of lowfat or fat-free dairy products every day.

Currently more than 70 retailers (representing nearly 70 percent of total groceries sold in the United States) and 50 dairy manufacturers have joined the program.

Consumers can see the 3-A-Day of Dairy logo on more than 2.5 billion qualified milk, cheese and yogurt packages nationwide.
The 3-A-Day of Dairy program works. An independent analysis of the 3-A-Day of Dairy marketing components (e.g., advertising, in-store promotions, Internet efforts, special events, and public relations) showed the program helped contribute to overall category sales:
-
Fluid milk – 2 percent
-
Cheese – 3 percent
-
Yogurt – 4 percent
The American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dietetic Association, and the National Medical Association endorse the program and are providing nutrition education materials to their more than 250,000 health professional members nationwide.
Enjoying three cups of milk or milk products every day as part of a healthy diet as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines improves the overall nutritional quality of the diet. Together, milk, cheese and yogurt provide a unique package of nine essential nutrients.
Studies show dairy foods, when consumed as part of a healthy diet, improve overall diet quality and may help to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, hypertension, obesity, kidney stones, and colon cancer. Enjoying three servings of milk, cheese or yogurt as part of a nutrient-rich, balanced diet may help to maintain a healthy weight.
